I am very proud to be able to show you a cover from a new country (# 32) today. Hocine sent me this cover from Algeria on August 9, 2008. This is my first cover from an African country! :d
And it's a very very nice cover, which makes it even better :)
The souvenir sheet was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the national freeing front football team.
The Algerian Freeing Front (AFF) wanted to establish a sports organization to show the NFF's name and to represent the country in international events. This gave birth to the idea of creating a football (soccer) team with Algerian players who were competing in the French competition. The NFF launched an appeal to all players asking them to join the Revolution ranks.
After this call, the Algerian players left France and headed for Tunesia. On April 12, 1958 the Algerian football team was officially established.
Since the entire world was carefully following the preparations for the World Cup in Sweden (1958), the appeal of the AFF had a huge media echo.
During its existence, the team has won 67 matches, played 15 draws and lost only 7 times!! That's much better than what the Belgian national football team is achieving at this moment... :s (our 'Red devils' look more like 11 little gnomes at this moment... :) )
It continued to play and to militate until the country recovered its independence.
